Y Pants were a punk/no wave trio from New York in the early 80s. They are often lumped into the "new york no wave" crowd, but they were very unique in that they used unconventional instruments such as toy pianos and ukuleles. This CD includes the "Y Pants" EP on 99 Records released in 1980, and their "Beat It Down" LP on Neutral Records in 1982... and a couple tracks from compilations.

UPDATE: My internet has been zapped for the last day, and I actually had no idea that the brilliant Arthur C. Clarke has died. I took the name for this mix from a screenshot in the film 2001, because I just watched it for the nine billionth time. I did not mean any disrespect. Rest in peace Mr. Clarke. Very strange coincedence!

When Shadows Move (7", Iconoclast International, 1983, US)
1. The River Sleeps
2. Markers
3. Trust
4. Must Be West
5. I Would Dream
6. A Busy Morning
"Gassen formed the pioneering minimalist-electro-wave act Jacket Weather in 1982, mixing dual Casiotone keyboards, real bass and drums – with the desolate imagery of the Arizona desert. “I loved the contrast of the synths with human percussion and the sensual backdrop of the desert,” Gassen adds. “We thought the tension of my cold, distant vocals and synths with the bombastic rock rhythm section made our sound unique.
Described in their day as a cross between Joy Division and Young Marble Giants, with some Wall Of Voodoo mixed in, Jacket Weather etched their own minimalist sound. Staccato, expressionistic vocals accent the snake-like mingling of the Casiotones, while a steady dance pulse backs the eerie mixture. Equally enraptured with Euro-synth, English post-punk and Los Angeles punk-wave, Jacket Weather found inspiration from such opposites as Our Daughter’s Wedding to the Suburban Lawns for their Casiotone symphonies." -from their myspace page
Awesome hard to find post punk/minimal synth/wave!

Four Minutes To Midnight (7", Zoar, 1982, US)
1. Four Minutes To Midnight
2. Adrenalin Control
3. L-I-G-H-T
Crazy Hearts were a New York post punk band. The first track has a really strong PIL-vibe. Excellent echoed-out vocals. The other tracks are much more chaotic, reminding me more of the "no wave" sound. All in all a cool fucking record, highly recommended.

Péloquin/Sauvageau
"Launched in 1972, Laissez-nous vous embrasser ou ça fait mal is one of the most original records ever made in Quebec. Though avant-garde, it still managed to garner radio support and wide public attention thanks to the trance-like track 'Monsieur L'Indien'. The 'Us' in Let us kiss you where it hurts is Claude Peloquin, controversial poet, And Jean Sauvageau, a Quebec electronic music pioneer. Together after memorable trips and artistic happenings throughout the 60's, they came up with this eccentric avant-garde masterpiece. With topics ranging from revolution ('Monsieur Emiliano'), to exploitation ('Monsieur L'Indien'), vasectomy ('Sterilization') or even scatology ('Mama Vagina'), the record exploded onto the local scene during the dark ages of Quebec Pop Music (something very similar to what's happening now). Claude Peloquin, the vocalist, can be heard laughing, screaming, babbling into the mike as he 'cracks open a brew' overtop a cocktail of explosive and highly original electronic music. A wall of sound shifting from synthetic psychedelic ambience, doped out choir to fucked up western. Techno spoken word? Electroclash? Experimental Rock? Pretty far from the hippie stuff you'd expect for the times."
