Morton Subotnick

The Wild Bull (LP, Nonesuch, 1968, US)

1. The Wild Bull Part 1
2. The Wild Bull Part 2

One of the best parts about being on tour, is being able to go to record stores all around the country and find great deals. I found this record at my new favorite record store in Austin, Texas, Breakaway Records. It is a small, but extensive shop... all exclusively vinyl. Everything was totally reasonably priced, as well. I found this record in the "other/electronic" section. They had an awesome selection of 45's, psychedelic, rock, punk, some industrial, and some just completely whacked-out stuff I have never heard of. I strongly suggest going there if you're in the area.

About the record...

Morton Subotnick is a legend in electronic composition. His most famous pieces were his two commissioned for Nonesuch; Silver Apples Of The Moon (posted by The Thing On The Doorstep, here) and The Wild Bull. These were both composed on Subotnick's Buchla modular synthesizer system. Donald Buchla worked directly with Subotnick to design this peculiar instrument to his specifications. The sound from Buchla machines is immense and overwhelming, especially with Subotnick on the controls.

Notes from the back of the LP sleeve:

" The first side of this record was almost complete when I came across "The Wild Bull", I was very impressed by the poem and quickly began to feel an affinity between the poem and the composition I was working on . . . in fact, the first three notes of the work seemed to me a kind of human/wild-bull moan . . . and later I added a human breathing sound to one of the notes.
There was never an attempt to 'portray' the poem (I don't think music is about that), but at the same time it became harder and harder to disassociate myself from the pathos and restrained cry of personal loss which spoke to me from such a distant point in time. The state of mind which the poem evoked became intimately tangled with the state of mind my own composition was evoking in me. To title the work after the poem seemed natural and to offer the poem seems equally natural. " - Morton Subotnick

I couldn't find a proper text of the poem, and I have some time to kill, so I decided to type it out, because I believe it's necessary.

THE WILD BULL

The wild bull, who has lain down, lives no more
the wild bull, who has lain down, lives no more,
Dumuzi, the wild bull, who has lain down, lives no more,
the wild bull, who has lain down, lives no more.

O you wild bull, how fast you sleep!
How fast sleep ewe and lamb!
O you wild bull, how fast you sleep!
How fast sleep goat and kid!

I will ask the hills and the valleys,
I will ask the hills of the Bison:
"Where is the young man, my husband?"
I will say,
"He whom I no longer serve food"
I will say,
"He whom I no longer give to drink"
I will say,
"And my lovely maids"
I will say,
"And my lovely young men?"

"The Bison has taken thy husband away,
up into the mountains!"

"The Bison has taken thy young man away,
up into the mountains!"

"Bison of the mountains, with the mottled eyes!
Bison of the mountains, with the crushing teeth!
Bison!-He sleeps sweetly, he sleeps sweetly,
He whom I no longer serve sleeps sweetly,
He whom I no longer give to drink sleeps sweetly,
My lovely maids sleep sweetly,
My lovely young men sleep sweetly!"

"My young man who perished from me
(at the hands of) your men,
My young Ababa who perished from me
(at the hands of) your men,
Will never more calm me (with) his loving glance
Will never more unfasten his lovely bright clasp
(at night)
On his couch you made the jackals lie down,
In my husband's fold you made the raven dwell,
His reed pipe-the wind plays it,
My husband's songs-the north wind sings them."

Sumerian, c. 1700 BC, translated by Thorkild Jacobsen.

2. Eintrachtkreis-Paranoia (Die 200jahrfeier Findet Nicht Statt - Kondominatsmusik - 1972) (1:02)
3. Verhütungsfreudenwalzer (Kontinenzmusik Für Eine Akademie 1973) (1:27)
4. Speedy Achmed (Verhaltensanweisung 1973) (3:46)
5. Studentenzucker - "Tue Gern, Was Du Tun Mußt!" (Konfektionsmusik 1973) (0:36)

7. Phönix - 1972 (10:14)
8. "Was Dir Heute Freude Macht, Das Verschieb Nicht Über Nacht!" (Kondensmusik Aus Einem Konzert Im Gallery-House London - 1973) (4:16)
9. Auszug Aus Einem Konzert In Der Düsseldorfer Kunsthalle 1971 (7:45)

This was posted by Mutant Sounds about two years ago, and blurbed about on Matrixsynth about a year ago, but I thought I would bring forth this mammoth recording once again. Seesselberg were a little known German brotherly experimental electronic duo. They recorded this record between 1971 and 1973 and released it themselves in a run of 1000. I am assuming this was all recorded using an intense rig of modular synthesizers and effects... I have a guess that they were using Serge machines from their lone YouTube video online, but also could have used hand-built equipment. This recording makes incredible use of the stereo spectrum. Rich filter sweeps and sample and hold patterns whoosh around your head. Some of the most impressive and out-of-this-world synthesizer sounds I have ever heard. Anyone that is a fan of abstract electronic music and/or freaked out psychedelic music should definitely check this out.

A small German compact disc label, Plate Lunch reissued this recording in 2002... which you can (I think?) purchase here.

The files are separated into two sidelong mp3s.

C-30 mail collaboration tape between 3 somewhat well-known sound manipulators. The initial recordings were by Frans De Waard (Kapotte Muziek)... then they were processed by Jos Smolders (IOSS), and John Hudak.

Interesting release. I definitely heard some teeth brushing in there.

Here's a nice experimental/industrial tape from Mike Honeycutt aka Mystery Hearsay. Lots of overlapping strange synth sounds and noises. There were some conflicting tracklists on Discogs, so I went with the one on the j-card. Correct me if I'm wrong. More from Midas Music/Tapes to come later tonight.

The Art Of Noise

(Who's Afraid Of?) The Art Of Noise! (LP, Island Records, 1984, UK)

1. A Time For Fear (Who's Afraid)
2. Beat Box (Diversion One)
3. Snapshot
4. Close (To The Edit)
5. Who's Afraid (Of The Art Of Noise)
6. Moments In Love
7. Momento
8. How To Kill
9. Realization

I suppose this record is considered "classic" and has been posted elsewhere time and time again, but for some reason I haven't actually listened to it until recently. Very interesting and ahead of its time for when it came out. You can hear many different samples in this record that made their way into massive pop songs in the 90's.

Excellent sample heavy, experimental pop music.

1. Dazzling Array 1
2. Lost In The Swirling Distance
3. Dazzling Array 2
4. Before Mutual Grace
5. Upon Steels Heaven
6. Into Grey Divides
7. Gathering In Frozen Beauty

From Discogs:

"Belgian composer Dirk Serries chose the name Vidna Obmana for his musical persona because it means "optical illusion." in Serbian language. Thirteen years hence, Vidna Obmana still finds that the name gives him a feeling of freedom to place his music first, before his own personality and philosophy. Like water, Vidna Obmana continues to change form over his musical career.
As a self-taught electronic musician, Vidna Obmana explored different musical areas before discovering the techniques of looping and shaping harmonies, merging layers of sound and minimizing the configurations to a few notes. His style of atmospheric music creates trance-like states in listeners who understand the language of sound."

Gorgeous minimal ambient release.

Oveo

Ancient TV (CDr, Self-Released, 2007, US)

1. Ancient TV

Here is a nice document of the experimental scene in my town- Denton, Texas. Oveo was a project of two prolific local musicians, Jason Moore and Andrew Michael. Ancient TV is their minimal dronescape masterpiece. They utilize various electronics and effect treatments. AM's signature Korg drum machine gives a pulse throughout the 18 minute long piece, while foggy, lush, meditative sounds wash in and out. For fans of any dark ambient music...
